UAE Self-Driving Taxis: Pioneering the Future of Urban Mobility

The UAE self-driving taxis initiative is rapidly transforming the nation’s transportation landscape, positioning the country at the forefront of autonomous mobility. With strategic partnerships and technological advancements, cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are leading the charge toward a future where autonomous vehicles redefine urban travel.

Dubai’s Vision for Autonomous Transportation

Dubai is steadfast in its ambition to become a global leader in autonomous transportation. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has collaborated with international tech giants to introduce UAE self-driving taxis to the city’s roads. This move aligns with Dubai’s strategy to have 25% of all trips conducted by autonomous vehicles by 2030.

In partnership with Baidu’s Apollo Go, the RTA plans to launch a fleet of autonomous taxis, starting with 50 vehicles in a trial phase and expanding to 1,000 by 2026. These vehicles, known as RT6, are equipped with 40 state-of-the-art sensors and detectors, ensuring high levels of safety and efficiency. This initiative is a significant step toward achieving Dubai’s broader goal of making 25% of all transportation autonomous by 2030. 

Technological Advancements and Safety Features

The UAE self-driving taxis in Dubai boast impressive technological features:

• Sensor Suite: Each vehicle is equipped with 40 sensors and detectors, including LiDAR, cameras, and radar systems, to navigate complex urban environments safely.

• Passenger Experience: Touchscreen tablets provide real-time ride updates, while AI-driven systems ensure a comfortable journey by adjusting cabin temperature and music preferences.

• Safety Measures: Emergency support buttons connect passengers to remote assistance teams, and the vehicles are designed to accommodate passengers with visual or hearing impairments.

Abu Dhabi’s Pioneering Efforts with TXAI

Abu Dhabi has also made significant strides in autonomous transportation. In December 2024, WeRide launched a commercial autonomous taxi service in the capital, operating within designated geo-fenced areas with safety operators onboard. This initiative has paved the way for broader adoption of UAE self-driving taxis across the nation.

The TXAI service, developed by Bayanat, represents the UAE’s first fully autonomous taxi operation. The initial phase saw five TXAI-branded vehicles operating on Yas Island, transporting passengers between nine stops that include hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and offices. Phase two will include more TXAI vehicles in multiple locations across Abu Dhabi.
